Day 109 of 365
This one is a lesson photo for me. I learned that I probably should have something to stabilize my camera if I'm using my 70-300mm lens later in the day. Even though the shutter speed was 1/60 sec I was also at 300mm and while I can hold steady quite well with my smaller lens with a shutter speed of 1/60 sec apparently not so with my telescopic lens fully extended. This photo is the closes to in focus I had after downloading and looking at the photos I took. Thankfully I only took about 12 today so I didn't have 50+ disappointments.

I think generally the rule of thumb is you can handhold and expect sharp results with a shutter speed down to 1/(focal length). With your lens at 300mm, for example, you can reasonably expect to see no shake when handholding at a shutter speed of 1/300 of a second; at 250mm, you can shoot at 1/250 sec., etc.
Thanks Pete...
I think you just did a podcast about this very thing but of course being a guy I figured I could do it.
Lesson learned. :)
I mean CanonBlogger (aka Jason) podcast talked about this very thing.
