Intersection

River outlet on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk beach. I enjoyed the difference between the rushing water into the ocean and the retreating tide.

38 Packard Goddess of Speed

38 Packard Goddess of Speed, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I"ve missed the past few years of the Monterey Cherry's Jubilee. This year I took the day off of work so I could head downtown and take photos of all the classic cars and hot rods that rolled in for the Jubilee. Took lots of car details shots as it was hard to get full car shots without a bunch of people in the shot. I like the details better anyway.

Dahlia

Dahlia, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I fought and fought against photographing flowers at a certain point of my 365 project. Why? I thought it was too easy and kind of a cop out on being creative. Well...I was wrong and have since gone out of my way to photograph them when I'm feeling a bit uncreative because they always seem to help me get out of my funk.

Transamerica Pyramid

Transamerica Pyramid, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I don't typically process photos like this but while playing around I decided I liked it. It reminds me of how I think of San Francisco...dirty and grungy and in need of a really good scrubbing.

Turquise Building

IMG_9812-Edit, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I took this photo of a funky building in San Francisco specifically for a Window Wednesday theme I participate in on Google+.

Bee on Flower

IMG_9757-Edit-Edit, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I've been experimenting with square images. I think this format works particularly well with macro photos...as this one is.

The only issue is it's a bit difficult finding square frames.

Rust

Rust by Rob Weiher, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

Came across this very beat up and rusty Carmen Ghia the other day. I'm working on a scavenger hunt where rust is one of the items to find so this was my submission.

Flowers for inspiration

IMG_9519-Edit, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

At one point in my 365 project I got it in my head that taking photos of flowers was cheating because they were so easy. Once I got over that I find that flowers help me get through those times I've feeling a bit non-creative. The last few days I've spent strolling the many public gardens around Monterey where flowers are almost always in bloom year round.

Nature's Kaleidoscope

Nature's Kaleidoscope, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

While on a short hike through the redwoods I spotted this rather large spiderweb that was all lit up by the sun. The way the light was hitting it reminding me of a kaleidoscope.

Marina beach long exposure

Marina beach long exposure, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

One thing that I learned from my 365 project was that I really enjoyed trying to make painterly photos. One way to do this was to use a long exposure and motion. I get quite a bit of satisfaction out of creating something that some people do in post all in camera.

Davenport beach

Davenport north, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I met up with over 50 other photographers last Saturday to celebrate the one year anniversary of Google+ by going out on a photowalk. We met at this little blip on the map north of Santa Cruz and ventured down on the beach for part of the day and then down into Santa Cruz for dinner and some street photography. Big Sur has the most beautiful coast views but between Santa Cruz and San Francisco runs a very close second.

Big Basin Redwood SP

Big Basin Redwood SP, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

Someone called the shot "crunchy"...not sure what they meant. This was on a gaming forum in a photography thread...where for some reason my shots are the only ones that get any kind of negative critiques.

Is the shot good? bad? I have no clue anymore...

Camping amongst the California Redwoods got me an opportunity to work on my black and white skills.

Cross Shadow

IMG_9192, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

To celebrate my wife graduating from college we drove down through Carmel Valley and stopped at the Soledad Mission, which is this small mission out in the middle of nowhere that was restored in the 1950's. It was a beautiful little spot to stop and have a picnic lunch and wander the little chapel and museum. I was drawn to the shadows being cast in the chapel. #blackandwhitephotography #photography #shadows

Duct tape solution

IMG_9111.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

In the Army we used duct tape (or as we called it hundred mile an hour tape) to keep our vehicles together in a pinch. This is the rear corner of a "tour" bus I spotted in San Francisco recently. It was parked so lets hope it has been decommissioned.

The reeds in my last photo have been identified by some G+ commenters as Horsetail reeds.

Reeds

IMG_9121.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

Not sure what kind of reed this is...I assumed they were found near lakes and ponds (since that's where I've seen them typically) but these were outside a building in San Francisco.

I enjoyed the contrast of them against the adobe wall.

I'll cut you (part 2)

IMG_9100.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

Can you make something downright nasty, like concertina wire, into something more pleasing to the eye?

Lines

IMG_9067.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I wasn't sure what I'd find on the photowalk but it was pretty apparent when I got there that my focus would be on lines and shapes.

Shadows

IMG_9153.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

The cloud cover opened up just enough as I walked by some storefronts and this shadow formed on a large concrete support. The louvred overhang supplied the pattern.

Streamers on a wire

IMG_9072.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

I was just thinking the other day while walking around campus and seeing kids with their iPods on and furiously texting while walking that they must miss so many things. I'm always taking in my environment...then again I don't own a Smart phone.

Mirror mirror

IMG_9122.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

Funny thing is I've walked by these mirrors several times while roaming around the town I live in and never thought to take a photo. It took heading to San Francisco and consciously looking for lines and shapes for me to find it appealing.

I will cut you!

IMG_9101.jpg, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

Another from the SF photowalk. I had gotten away from the main group of people and found this concertina wire on top of an old fence. As people came up on me shooting these a line formed behind me...my theme was lines and shapes and I created my own line...of people waiting behind me. Haha...I make myself laugh sometimes.

I'm going that way

I'm going that way, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.
Picked up my camera for the first time in about two months today. Adobe was doing a photowalk at their SF office so decided to head up there to get out of my surroundings and find some inspiration. Ended up shooting things I could very well find here but it did get my creative juices flowing again.

Cormorants

Cormorants, originally uploaded by Rob Weiher.

It was really foggy the day I went out with my camera while visiting the Seattle/Tacoma area over the holiday. I have a friend who lives near Steel Lake in Federal Way, WA so I stopped on my way to visit him. Found these Cormorants lined up on old pilings in the water.
